FIFTY-FOUR

It had been an eight-minute wait in the club. Heidi had stayed with Rhodes the entire time, hoping that no one would come across them.

Even when the cavalry arrived, Heidi was still on her guard.

Chuck walked into the room with a frown on his face. He took one look around the makeshift club and then back at Heidi. “My goodness,” he muttered as he took in the scene. “What the hell happened here?”

“I was working a case, and my partner got attacked,” Heidi explained hurriedly. With Chuck’s eyes glaring down at her, she felt like a teenager who had overstepped her mark and was now relying on an exasperated parent to bail her out.

“Is anyone else likely to come and disturb us?” Chuck asked. Even though he’d gladly take the risk for her, he would prefer sneaking out under the cover of darkness. And she knew the two guards he had arrived with were not just there to help her and Rhodes out but also to take care of anyone who could trace them back to the Archive.

“No, we’re all alone. Everyone else has cleared off.” Heidi said the words with confidence, though she didn’t know for certain. And she suspected that if Chuck had thought there’d be an entire crowd waiting for them, he wouldn’t have bothered coming through.

“So, there’s nothing wrong with you specifically?” He then looked at the fallen Rhodes, feeling a little irritated that Heidi had made him come all this way for someone who wasn’t part of the Archive.

“I can’t take him to a hospital. There’ll be too many questions. And I can’t risk it getting back to the Archive,” she said.

Pleased that Heidi was at least thinking about safeguarding the Archive, Chuck motioned to the two guards, who picked up Rhodes and carried him out. “I’ve got a van waiting around the back,” Chuck explained. “We’re going to take him to one of our hideaways. Not in use and off the books.”

They put Rhodes into the back of a van and drove to a warehouse that had been frequently used by the Archive for a variety of purposes, whether that was storing goods, providing operatives with a place to lie low, or receiving medical attention.

There was a makeshift hospital room that was prepared with equipment that had been taken from actual operating rooms. A doctor was on standby, and he came the moment Chuck called. The doctor had long since lost his license to practice medicine, but the Archive still paid him a small fortune to tend to its employees.

The doctor examined Rhodes’s broken body while Chuck took Heidi to one side to speak with her.

“You want to tell me what the hell you’re playing at?” he asked in a hushed voice.

“What do you mean?” Heidi replied.

“When you told me you were setting up this bail bond business, the only thing that stopped me from pulling the plug was that you assured me it wouldn’t impact the Archive.”

“It hasn’t.”

“So, what would you call that?” Chuck pointed to Rhodes’s unconscious body.
